🎙️Where The Roots Meet The Soil
Why Starting A Garden Now Matters More Than Ever!
Growing your own food, isn’t just for people that want to live off grid, it never was. I like to think of the family garden like one of those rooms everyone used to have but modern conveniences caused them to phase out, like the still room.
Not only have mergers and consolidations in the food industry caused prices to skyrocket but changes in our climate have disrupted supply chains and forced farmers into retirement.
We can’t wait for government to fix the mess that exists, there are so many problems on so many levels that it would take years of dedicated sorting and courts deciding how to fairly break things apart.
Secret In Plain Sight:
As a environmental biologist, I’ve been studying climate change on the sidelines for over 20 years. Secretly searching for what I would call a proven, credible solution that could actually make an impact that could reverse the climate problems, not just put a band-aid on them.
I’m tired of dividing forces pitting us against each other, neither side listening to the other. Maybe you are too? Maybe you are ready for something that could pull families and communities back together.
It’s Not A Magic Bullet, It’s 3%
Eighty million years ago, there was an event called the Azolla event, that literally reversed the heating atmosphere into an ice age.
The truth is Azolla is a tiny fast growing plant, that under the right conditions didn’t decompose. It captured probably millions of tons of carbon under the Arctic Ocean.
Today, the Arctic Ocean covers just 3% of the planet, coincidentally human disturbed areas (cities, farmland, etc) cover 2.9%.

Present Day Example
A specific type of wetland can do the same thing, you might have thought all wetlands were the same, maybe they bring up visions of mud flats, horsetails and tall egrets.
Peatlands, form in areas of low to no water flow. They form a similar situation to what happened during the Azolla event, where decaying plants can’t escape and become trapped at the bottom, capturing lots and lots of carbon with them.
Where Your Garden Comes In
You can do something similar in your own garden or even by letting your grass grow longer. The important part happens around the soil, protect the moisture in your soil with mulch until you can use trimmings off of you garden as green mulch.
Overtime, when gardeners and farmers don’t tear up the ground to remove plants or to replant, the organic matter content in the ground increases. You can also read that as trapping carbon in the ground from the plants, wood chips and fungi.
The craziest part about this is it only takes 3% organic matter content in your soil, to restore natures inherent systems. This means the soil becomes a healthier ecosystem, a healthier place to grow your food and vital cycles are put in motion.
